King’s Cross Charrette 2007

How would you cope if you were asked to design a building without the use of a computer?

That is exactly what 20 young practices faced in summer 2007 for the 2nd annual AJ Charrette. They arrived at a Victorian building which overlooked a 280 metre long building site and were asked to design something for it. In just 7 hours.

It was a challenge certainly, and stressful most definitely. However, the learning which was achieved in such a short space of time cannot be underestimated.

In this exclusive and comprehensive supplement brought to you by AJ, you will discover the demanding brief, and how each entrant rose to this exciting challenge with the solutions examined in detail. The analysis in this guide exemplifies the diversity of emerging British architecture and shows that with some rising young stars, the future is truly bright for our industry.
